Deal Film Club completes its Summer Feast of French Films with this 2019 award-winning drama, directed and written by Céline Sciamma.
Set in 18th century France, this ravishing masterpiece tells of an enduring love affair between a young aristocratic lady and a female painter. Marianne (Noémie Merlant) is commissioned by a countess (Valeria Golino) to secretly paint the wedding portrait of her daughter Héloïse (Adèle Haenel) whilst pretending to be her hired companion. However, intimacy and attraction blossom between both women. A compelling drama of illicit passion is played out against the stunning Brittany coastline. Probing themes of freedom and love, deep emotion and surface conformity, it is an exquisite and revolutionary depiction of artist and muse. Nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film 2020.
