How many films can boast ‘Over 60 British stars in one great feature!’?!
This curious 1951 drama brings the origins of cinema vividly to life. Its 60 starry cameos span everyone from Richard Attenborough to Peter Ustinov, with the likes of Laurence Olivier, Joyce Grenfell and Margaret Rutherford all jostling to tell the story of William Friese-Green (Robert Donat), a young British photographer who dreams of making the projection of moving images into a reality. Through luck and sheer obsessive perseverance, he succeeds in creating a working motion picture camera, but then struggles to interest the public.
This screening will be introduced by Nick Furze, School of Creative Arts and Industries, Canterbury Christchurch University.
The Magic Box will be preceded by a brief showcase of new work by Young Filmmakers, shown in support of the Young Film Network.
